Counter wood
Counter wood is a composite panel with **a high-density MDF core (720–760 kg/m³) and a Formica, laminate, or engineered-stone face** at 38 or 40 mm overall thickness. Stocked in 63×246 and 76×305 cm panels in 120+ colours and textures, certified to EN 14322 and E1 — for residential and commercial counters with a premium look and durable surface response.

What is counter wood?
Counter wood is a ready-to-install composite panel composed of a high-density MDF core (720–760 kg/m³) topped with Formica laminate, melamine laminate, or engineered-stone resin. It ships at 38 or 40 mm overall thickness with a postformed or square edge, ready for direct installation onto kitchen base cabinets, office desks, or reception counters without additional finishing.
The face consists of an HPL (High Pressure Laminate) layer 0.7–1.2 mm thick, bonded under 70-bar pressure at 140 °C. This bond gives the surface high scratch resistance (≥ 3.5 on the Mohs scale), brief heat resistance up to 180 °C, and resistance to chemical staining and UV.
Riyadh Timber stocks counter wood by special order from European systems (Egger, Kronospan, Wilsonart) in marble, wood, and stone-imitation patterns. The front edge is available in postformed (rolled curve) or square ABS-banded form.
Why choose counter wood for kitchens and offices?
Counter wood combines the look of premium stone or wood at 70–80% lower cost, durable surface response, heat resistance to 180 °C, and resistance to daily stains and chemicals. It is the standard cost-effective solution for residential kitchens and daily-use offices versus natural granite or quartz surfaces.
Natural granite or quartz surfaces cost SAR 850–2,200 per square metre installed, while counter wood with Formica face costs SAR 180–450 per panel (≈ 1.5 m²). This price gap makes it the default choice for residential kitchens and operational offices where appearance matters but the budget is constrained.
The hard surface response outperforms traditional solid wood or plywood tops. Formica is not scratched by light knives and is unaffected by coffee, wine, or oils, and needs no periodic finishing oil unlike traditional beech or maple tops.
What are the specifications of counter wood?
Counter wood ships at 38 or 40 mm thickness in 63×246 and 76×305 cm panels. The MDF core has density 720–760 kg/m³; the HPL face is 0.7–1.2 mm. Heat resistance is up to 180 °C briefly, formaldehyde emissions are E1, and the product conforms to EN 14322 and NEMA LD3. Available in 120+ colours and textures.

What are the applications of counter wood?
Counter wood serves five applications: residential kitchen counters, executive office desks, commercial reception counters, hotel bar tops, and laboratory and pharmacy counters. The hard core and surface resistance to heat and stains define applications requiring durable daily surface response at a moderate cost.
- 01
Residential kitchen counters
Surfaces above base cabinets in villas and apartments at 38 mm thickness with rolled postformed edges. Marble or wood-grain colours match cabinet fronts without the cost of natural granite.
- 02
Executive office desks
Desk tops for management and executive offices at 40 mm with square ABS-banded edges. The premium wood appearance combined with practical surface response handles paper, pens, and electronic devices well.
- 03
Commercial reception counters
Reception counters for hotels, clinics, and administrative offices at 40 mm. The scratch- and stain-resistant surface withstands intensive use and daily cleaning with strong cleaning agents.
- 04
Hotel bar tops
Drink and café bar tops at 40 mm. Formica resists coffee, alcohol, and citrus stains, and the heat resistance accommodates hot cups without lasting marks.
- 05
Laboratory and pharmacy counters
Worktops in labs and pharmacies at 40 mm with phenolic-resin chemical-resistant surface. Resists weak acids, bases, and common laboratory organic solvents.
What is the difference between counter wood and laminated MDF?
Counter wood is 38–40 mm with a dense MDF core and HPL surface, with rolled postformed edges ready for daily use. Laminated MDF is 9–18 mm with a melamine surface that is thinner and less resistant. Counter wood is for hard daily surfaces; laminated MDF for fronts and shelving.
Choose counter wood for daily-use work surfaces exposed to knives, heat, and liquids. Choose laminated MDF for cabinet fronts, doors, and decorative shelves where use is lighter.
Counter wood costs 3–4× as much as laminated MDF but delivers 10–15× the surface durability. The difference is justified for daily surfaces where premature replacement costs more.
| Attribute | Counter wood | Laminated MDF |

How do I choose the right counter wood for my project?
Thickness depends on span: 38 mm for kitchen counters under 2.4 m, 40 mm for longer spans and intensive commercial use. Colour follows design: marble shades for classical kitchens, wood for warm offices, stone for modern bars. Postformed edges for kitchens; square ABS for offices.
For standard residential kitchens, specify 38 mm thickness with postformed edge and marble or wood Formica face. For executive offices, specify 40 mm with square ABS edge and a premium wood face (walnut or oak).
How is counter wood installed?
Counter wood is fixed with metal angle brackets every 40–60 cm to the base-cabinet frame, with a clear silicone bead between the surface and frame to prevent vibration. Joints between panels are tightened with Tite-Joint clamps and filled with colour-matched silicone to conceal the line.
For cutting, use a base saw with an 80+ tooth carbide blade to avoid Formica chipping. Apply masking tape along the cut line before sawing to reduce splintering. Complex cuts (for sinks and cooktops) require a jigsaw with a fine blade.
Drop-in sink installation requires a cut-out 2 mm smaller than the sink rim on all sides. Undermount sink installation requires counter wood with a hard resin face — not standard Formica — to prevent water seepage into the MDF core.
Does counter wood meet Saudi standards?
Counter wood supplied by Riyadh Timber meets European EN 14322 and American NEMA LD3, with E1 formaldehyde emissions (≤ 0.124 mg/m³) required for interior use under SBC 201. Each shipment includes the mill certificate, surface-response test report, and an E1 certificate from an accredited laboratory.
For commercial kitchens and laboratories, counter wood with phenolic-resin face meeting NEMA LD3 chemical-resistance grade is specified. This grade is sufficient for most medical and laboratory environments in Saudi hospitals and health facilities.
Which Saudi projects use counter wood?
Counter wood is used in Vision 2030 projects including NEOM, Red Sea, Diriyah, and Qiddiya, in Al Yasmin and Al Malqa villas and apartments, in central-Riyadh hotels, in shopping centres along King Fahd Road, and in medical labs in major hospitals — for kitchen counters, reception counters, and executive desks.

What are common questions about counter wood?
Special-order minimum is **20 panels** or roughly enough to fit out 2 average residential kitchens. Smaller quantities are available from variable stock if the colour is on hand; otherwise a special order is required with a 4–6-week lead time from European mills.
Counter wood with Formica face **withstands brief heat up to 180 °C for ≤ 30 seconds**. For very hot pans straight off the stove, use an insulating pad. Sustained direct heat causes permanent surface deformation.
Formica face lasts **15–20 years** in normal residential use and 8–12 years in heavy commercial use. The MDF core outlasts the surface, and the surface alone can be re-laminated with new Formica without replacing the core.
The Formica surface is **fully water-resistant**, but the MDF core is affected by water ingress through unbanded edges or sink cut-outs. Proper installation with silicone around sinks and wet locations prevents water from reaching the core.
Yes — counter wood is **suitable for bathroom vanities** provided a hard resin face (not standard HPL) is used and full silicone is applied around sink and tap fittings. For very wet bathrooms (curbless showers) use engineered-stone surfaces instead.
Available in **120+ colours and textures** including: marble shades (Carrara, Emperador, Travertine), wood shades (oak, walnut, teak, beech), stone shades (granite, quartzite), and solid colours (black, white, grey). Samples are available in the showroom for review before order.
Yes — we provide **professional installation by trained joinery teams** familiar with European systems. Installation includes site cutting, sink and cooktop fitting, silicone sealing, and a 24-month surface warranty against installation defects.
